Fall! That wonderful time of year when the summer temperatures give way to cooler days, the kids go back to school and the smell of roasting chiles is in the air.
Most people who have lived in the desert southwest for any length of time know about the bright, green and red spicy treats called Hatch, Big Jim and Anaheim to name a few. These chiles have their origins in New Mexico but seeds have found there way to other states and are now also cultivated in Arizona, Colorado and California, as well as Mexico. They can be found in most stores in the south west year round however the usual harvest season is approximately from mid August to mid October or until the first frost occurs.
My wife and I, as well as our family, enjoy foods which include chiles.
We even get together with family and friends two or three times a year for a Hot Pot Luck party where folks bring a spicey dish to share with others. We have been buying chiles locally here in the Valley on an 'as needed'
basis till
last week. After a little research on the Web we decided to drive over to Hatch, New Mexico and purchase several pounds and different heat levels of chiles.
